Testing RTL Translations
Reason for Testing RTL Translations
Although for most languages it is sufficient to see that the translations/suggestions as they appear on Crowdin are correct, for right-to-left (RTL) languages such as Arabic, Farsi (Persian), and Hebrew it is sometimes helpful to see how they actually appear in Tunnelblick. This page describes how to do that without waiting for a new release of Tunnelblick.
Before you test translations to a particular language, make that language the first language in the list at System Preferences > Language & Region, and quit Tunnelblick if it is running. See Selecting a Language in macOS for details.)
Getting a Copy of Tunnelblick with Recent Translations
You can create your own copy of Tunnelblick that includes the most recent translations. You don't need any special tools other than Finder. Do the following:
- Email developers@tunnelblick.net and request that a new "build" of translations be done. That will ensure that your most-recent translations will be used.
- Wait for an email confirming that a new build has been done. We usually respond within a few hours or a day or so.
- Log into Crowdin.com.
- Download and save the (newly built) translations as "tunnelblick.zip" on your Desktop. There's an icon to do that near the upper-right corner of the Crowdin screen. If you hover the pointer over the icon it will display "Download translations (Last build 1 hour ago)" or something similar.
- If it has not already been expanded, double click "tunnelblick.zip" on your Desktop to expand it. (Safari usually expands it automatically, other browsers don't.)
- Double-click the folder named "StringsFiles" on your Desktop.
- Locate the folder for your language (see below) and drag it out of "StringsFiles" onto your Desktop.
- Change the first part of the name of the folder for your language to be upper-case – but see below for exceptions. For example, change "sv.lproj" to "SV.lproj", or "sr-CS.lproj" to "sr_Latn.lproj".
- Trash the "tunnelblick.zip" file and the "StringsFiles" folders.
- Open a new Finder window and navigate to /Applications.
- Hold down the "Option" key and drag & drop Tunnelblick out of /Applications to your Desktop to make a copy.
- Create a new folder on your Desktop named "Original TB".
- Hold down the "Option" key and drag & drop Tunnelblick into the "TB" folder to make a backup copy.
- Control-click the copy of Tunnelblick on your Desktop and select "Show Package Contents".
- Double-click on the "Contents" folder.
- Drag & drop the folder for your language (from step 7 above) onto the "Resources" folder. When asked, tell Finder to "Replace" the old copy.
- Install the updated version of Tunnelblick by Control-clicking it and clicking "Open".
Note that when installing and when using the modified version of Tunnelblick, you will be warned that it has been tampered with. Of course it has – you just tampered with it!
To reinstall your original Tunnelblick, Control-click the copy of Tunnelblick in the "Original TB" folder on your Desktop and click "Open".
Languages and Corresponding Folder Names
The name of the folder for a language within the Tunnelblick application is specified by macOS.
Most folder names from Crowdin are the two-letter ISO-639-1 code for the language, and the corresponding folder name in Tunnelblick's Resources folder is an upper-case version of the code.
Here are the exceptions – folder names that do not use the two-letter code for the language:
